John,the subwoofer has it's own built in amplifier which just powers the subwoofer only. It doesn't power your other speakers at all. Your other speakers are passive speakers that require an A/V receiver to power them. That's what the.1 means in a 5.1 system. Separate subwoofer is the .1, and the 5 is for your receiver to power your remaining speakers. Hope this answers your question.
