“I have an older Acoustimass 5 Bose system.The speakers are connected to subwoofer and the subwoofer connects to receiver.Can I connect the Sony subwoofer and the old Bose speakers directly to receiver? Will this cause a system failure? Fry everything?”

Not really, you can connect this as a secondary sub if your receiver supports it (5.2/7.2/9.2/11.2). I have set this up as 5.2 along with bose aquostimass v & it sounds great...
