“When I try to set 'Automatic White Balance" to something other than default, I am told that feature is not available with either Intelligent or Superior modes. If so, why is it even on the camera? ???”

Select a different mode that will allow you to adjust white balance. Certain modes control certain factors. Though I agree that WB wouldn't be one that comes to mind that would be limited. This is an excellent camera - enjoy it! I would use a programme P mode or Custom and there select and customise settings to your needs e.g: Incandescent or Fluorescent lighting or a tungsten flash.
