“Why is recorder playback low When I play back a dictated recording I have to turn the volume up to the maximum. I recorded with the microphone next to my mouth. I made no changes to the default setup after purchase except to change the scene to "voice notes". Is this normal?”

Check by playing the Voice file in the Computer as the Power output of the Sony ICDPX312 is only 300 mW. Also, check by setting the Mic Sensitivity option in the Detail Menu to Low.
