According to them it does not do surround sound, just dolby 5.1. This is probably meaningless for most uses, as camcorder microphones are usually not that good - compared to having a dedicated mic. ALL mics suffer from distance from the subject you wish to collect sound from. That is why in a professiional movie, a grip (person) is holding a long pole with a mic attached just a little ways above the actors head, just out of the movie frame. For weddings we used wireless mics, or took a feed from the house sound system and recorded the rest with shotgun or regular mics, also I would put audio recorders next to the musicians to capture their sound (even when the camcorders were not recording, as supplemental background music).
I am shooting everything in 4K, the sound is fine for the limitations of an onboard mic.
