• Sony makes a gunzoom mike (ECM-GZ1M) that attaches to the hot shoe. It's both powered by the shoe and carries the sound connection-- no cable required.

• Hi Melborne, yes, the hot shoe can be used to power external accessories. The camera has a mic jack and you can connect the ECMCS3 condenser mic to it. Thanks_Mitch
