Hi Jeff, Good question. This speaker relies on direct power from an AC outlet and does not have a battery option for charging. Therefore, it must be connected to an AC outlet in order to be powered on. I'd suggest checking out the Sony SRSXV800, SRSXV900, SRSXP500, and SRSXP700 models if you're looking for a similar design as the MHCV13 that offers both AC outlet and battery operation.
