Yes, you can play movies through the VR helmet. They don't have to be Blu Ray only. You can also play movie files from Youtube or an external hard drive or media drive (even movie files on a USB Stick. You just have to download the free Media Player app and the movie file has to be a standard readable format (.Mp4, MPEG-2, etc.). There's also support to play "VR" movie files though I haven't tried it yet with my Playstation VR helmet.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes,yes, yes you can watch any movie that PS4 can play. It's like having your own private movie theater, the biggest screen size in PSVR is a 225" screen. It is not the best but it's good enough I even play non vr games on it.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes you can watch movies and yes they must be played through the PS4. You can utilize the apps through the PS4 Store to watch movies so technically they don't have to be discs through the PS4. So download the YouTube app and yes it will play those movies. Content must be VR ready in order to experience a 180 or 360 degree experience though. Otherwise it will just play like your watching a movie theater screen.
