It's true the volume drops when unplugged, but unless you're in a very noisy environment it's still plenty loud. I've used mine in a large open room with 25+ people conversing at a dinner party to provide ambient music to guests and I still didn't hit full volume. That being said, the music was supposed to be background, and more for ambience. It's definitely not for huge raging parties unplugged, but for any normal situation I have found the unplugged volume to be plenty.
