“I have a 4k TV and want to get this 4k player. Can I connect my HDMI cable directly from the TV to the Blu Ray and then send the audio through my receiver? (Through hopefully HDMI) my receiver is not a 4k receiver”

Yes, but you can still go through the receiver as well. It's how I use mine at least, and there is no issues.

You can drive the Video to your TV unit from the primary HDMI port and then drive your audio over the Secondary HDMI port to your Receiver. The second HDMI Port is covered with a warning label and the instructions on configuring the second port are easy to follow.
