Dolby recently announced that they now have a Dolby Vision solution that can be implemented purely in software. This means that if the existing processor inside say the X800 is powerful enough and the current software architecture allows it, they "could" upgrade this player to support Dolby Vision. The problem comes from the business point of view. Companies like Sony are now thinking about next years player and what features can they add to get folks to keep buying players. Something tells me it won't be until next year and a new player before we see Dolby vision on Sony UBP. My few cents !
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later."Dolby Vision is simply a way for manufacturers that don't have the expertise to display HDR content." Adam K., this is a foolish comment. Dolby Vision is actually a better & more advanced format of HDR. You have things backwards. Dolby Vision applies HDR metadata to each individual frame &/or scene. HDR10 applies HDR statically to the entire movie at once which is not as dynamic as Dolby Vision. Dolby Vision requires licensing to use. HDR10 is an open source format that does not require licensing. If you were to say "HDR10 is simply a way for manufacturers to apply HDR that do not have Dolby Vision capabilities, expertise or licensing; then I might agree.

There is talk of a potential firmware or software update that may enable this version of HDR, I've heard that Dolby Vision HDR requires a specific chipset, but I see lately there is talk of a software implementation - good news for Sony should they choose to implement. I know the new LG player supports both versions of HDR and it's most likely why I'll most likely choose that upcoming 4K player as my LG supports both codes. If Sony had Dolby Vision HDR it would be a no brainer to buy this player. I really like the Sony ability to play my DTS and DVD surround audio discs over HDMI. -2.28.17
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Most likely... Sony TVs with the X1 Extreme processor will be getting an update to support Dolby Vision. However, as there is not much content in Dolby Vision, and HDR 10 is the standard, it really isn't that important. Dolby Vision is simply a way for manufacturers that don't have the expertise to display HDR content.
