“I have gotten two of these now and the disc tray will not open by pressing "eject" on the remote or the player if you turn it on first. Only opens if you press eject first, before turning it on?? Is this normal?? Am I missing something??”

Turn it on, (power up) then press the eject button twice. If you're watching netflix or some other online channel, you have to return the machine to the home page before it will operate the dvd tray

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I am sorry you have had this experience. I have not been able to replicate this problem with my player and have not had an issue with it. I am able to open the tray with the remote and on the physical unit with it on and with it off. I recommend you talk to customer service and see if they can help you out.
