Hi Larry, no, it only applies when you wish to view HDR content. The advantage of this Bluray player is it is capable of playing native 4K discs. If you play a non-4K disc on this Bluray player, the TV and/or Bluray's upscaling capabilities greatly enhances the content to near-4K quality. We recommend getting this player as when the time comes you upgrade to a Sony HDR TV, you'll have an HDR capable source device. Congratulations on your new purchase. Regards, -Mark
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I am in the same situation and this player does compensate even for non HDR tv’s. Plus you’re more likely to upgrade your TV in coming years to HDR than replace a Blu-ray player so I would say it’s a worthwhile investment.
