Yes, you can hook it up with an optical cable for sound, but you will not get the best sound. Optical cables cannot carry high-resolution audio like Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. HDMI is always better than optical when it's an option. For example, I used to watch Netflix through my TV's apps instead of my 4k player's apps. The disadvantage was that by streaming off my TV, the only audio out option I had was optical, so the best sound I could get was Dolby Digital. When streaming the same content through my 4k player via an HDMI audio cable, I was able to stream with Dolby Digital+, DTS, and TrueHD, and the sound quality is significantly better!
