“My music collection is stored on an external hard drive and not on my computer. I'd like to keep it that way. Is it possible to transfer music to the walkman without saving it on the computer or will the Sony software force me to save it on the pc?”

You will need Win 10 OS on a PC to interface with your external HD to find, select and drag/drop transfer your music files to your Sony Walkman player.
