Hi GrassCutter, The noise canceling function is most effective in low-frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices. The WF-1000XM3s should be able to lessen the sound of the lawnmower and make that task more enjoyable for your husband. Although you should not expect a 90%-100% noise block out but you'll definitely experience a 70-80% reduction in surrounding noise, once the ear buds are "properly" inserted into the ear canal. Now, you have to select the right kind and size of either foam/rubber tips that come along with this pair. There are multiple sizes so finding the right fit is only a matter of trial. Once the accurate tip has been selected, make sure the ear buds are in Noise Cancelling Mode (read manual) and you're good to go. Just one more advice. In the app that controls the ear buds, make sure the volume is set all the way to high. Otherwise you'll end up cranking up the phone's playback volume up with little to no boost in volume.
