“Sony's website says these have sidetone for phone calls but many reviewers online say there is no sidetone. Which is it? Also is it possible for transparency mode be added via a firmware update?”

I don’t know what exactly sidetone is, so I can’t answer that. For the transparency mode, there is none. These aren’t ANC. They have some special audio through the Sony app and other music apps. Unfortunately you have to sign up for those apps if you want to utilize the special function for these earbuds.
