I would check for connection issues and see if the green indicators are lit first. However, I know they don't always "fire" if you are using optical. That interface is limited to older, Dolby Digital 5.1. You have to be connected to the eARC port with a 2.0 HDMI, to a compatible port on your TV to get the complete range of sound options. I know this, because I have an older TV and am using the Optical connection as well as the regular HDMI ports to the Cable box and Roku, and only get "basic 5.1 sound". My plan is to upgrade my TV to one with an eARC port so I get all the bells and whistles. Also, as I have mentioned in other answers, there is a setting in "Advanced" (I believe it is "RF Channel") that addresses interference that defaults to "on", I have read that some people have less connection issues by turning that off. Also my DSEE HX is "on", I'm not sure what the default is on that. The speakers don't enrich the 3.1 sound in any way, they are strictly dedicated rears, so they aren't always active, depending on the content. Mine seem fine and I have them at default settings, in a large, open-concept room. They can be very subtle at times though. I hope this helps you out.
