Not sure if it was answered but if your friends phone is nearby it may not sync up. I found that if I had my phone on and tried to sync my iPad it wouldn't. Once I turned off the bluetooth for headphones on phone it did sync.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Plug into your computer, remove the Bluetooth pairing of the phone and then pair with the iPad. Technically, the iPad should recognize the headphones when turned on and you press the power button on the headset on and off a couples times to reset. If all else fails, do a hard reset by holding on the power button on for 30 seconds, or some models had a pin hole where you press with a paper clip to hard reset.
