Q: QuestionHow many watts is this speaker?
Asked by WB.
This question was asked about the related product: Sony - XE300 Portable Waterproof and Dustproof Bluetooth Speaker - Black
- A:Answer Great question. We don’t post wattage specifications because, without evaluating design of the speakers, resonance of the enclosures, and efficiency of the speakers those numbers would still tell an incomplete story. What would happen if we posted those numbers: 1. Company A has a 10w speaker Company B (SONY) has a 1w speaker This seems like a no brainer 10w is louder than 1w…right? 2. Now we get to see the efficiency of the speaker. Believe it or not, these speakers have the same loudness rating. Company A has a 10w speaker/ 90dB SPL = 100dB Company B has a 1w speaker/ 100dB SPL = 100dB 3. Now add frequency response. Company A has a 10w speaker/ 90dB SPL/ 10hz – 30Hz Company B has a 1w speaker/ 100dB SPL/ 10hz - 10,000Hz (much wider) Sony has made a much better speaker in this scenario, but because company A says it has 10 times the watts (and that is all they say). Company A sell way more speakers to unsuspecting consumers. Hopefully that helps, Erin

Q: QuestionI want to know how many watts this speaker has. It's very pretentious and obnoxious for a company to say they don't or won't disclose a standard feature that most consumers consider when purchasing a speaker. Let the consumer decide what's important.

Q: QuestionWhat is output in Watts?
Asked by Bobbi.
This question was asked about the related product: Sony - XE300 Portable Waterproof and Dustproof Bluetooth Speaker - Black
- A:Answer Hi Bobbi, thanks for your question. Unfortunately, the wattage of this speaker is not a public specification that we disclose at this time, and here is why. Watts tells an incomplete story when judging a speaker’s performance. To be more accurate you would need to know the watts, the dB rating, and frequency range (Hz) of all the speakers in the unit. Also, the distortion (THD) rate and the number of speakers driven for the rating of watts presented on the box. Yes, those things are not standardized. Then do some math, and you will get a general understanding of the loudness and range of the speaker in question. Then do that for all the different companies and you could compare with specs, though even if they were equal, they may sound different due to processing. At Sony we try to give you the absolute best sounding speaker, that has all the features our customers have told us really matter to them. Hope this helps. The XE300 speaker is perfect for bringing quality sound to your party. The Line-Shape Diffuser sends a wide sound all around, without compromising on quality. Plus, with a long battery life, portable size and impressive durability, this speaker is the perfect partner for your next party, wherever that might be. ~Earl

Q: QuestionHow many total watts is it? Why can't you answer that question? I don't know why you guys are hiding this fact? Maybe I should ask Greek Squad? They might be able to help me answer this question. Can you answer this or ask Greek Squad. Please advise ?
Asked by Fritacca.
This question was asked about the related product: Sony - XG300 Portable Waterproof and Dustproof Bluetooth Speaker - Black
- A:Answer Hello Fritacca, That’s a great question. When I get the question about watts, I assume you want to know how loud the speaker is. It is a fair question, but here is why we don’t use watts as a selling tool. How LOUD is it? When it comes to "loud," many customers only consider the amplifier's power or wattage rating, and in general (all other specs being equal), more watts does mean "louder." But while wattage is an important consideration, the efficiency of the speaker, and the number of speakers that are connected to the amplifier are also an important factor in the loudness equation. Not to mention the class of amp, and distortion rate quoted in the wattage rating. Got WATTTS? For example, Company A has a 20w speaker, and the Comp. B has a 10w speaker. Most people would think the 20w speaker would be 2x as loud, but that is not the case. You would get about a 30% increase if the amp, speakers, and speaker configuration were exactly the same. Why does speaker efficiency matter anyway? Now let’s say that Comp C’s 10w speaker performs at 90dB SPL, and Comp D’s 1w speaker performs at 100dB SPL. Again, the average person would say that obviously the 10w speaker will be louder. However, that is not the case, because Comp. D’s speaker is more efficient, it requires less power to be just as loud as Comp C’s speaker. Fun right. Sorry for the essay, but you asked, and we have not even discussed the different classes of amps, types of speaker design, speaker material, or distortion rates. All of which vary greatly between manufactures. So yes, watts seem to be a good indicator of how a speaker preforms, but we have found that because of the before mentioned factors that it paints an inaccurate picture of performance. -Ralph
