Yes you can leave the speaker plug in. I believe it bypass the battery.

The SRSXV80 is capable of running on power either from an AC outlet connected by the supplied AC power cord (mains lead) or from the rechargeable built-in lithium-ion battery. While the speaker is plugged into the power source, the Bluetooth standby function is activated. (When the Bluetooth standby function is activated, the speaker turns on automatically when you operate a Bluetooth device, and starts the Bluetooth connection.) Additional information: For charging the built-in battery of the speaker, the Battery Care mode option is available in addition to the normal charging method. Battery Care mode limits the maximum charge capacity to approximately 90% and makes the battery life last longer. The playback time available in Battery Care mode is shorter than the time available when the built-in battery is charged by the normal charging method. Both the Bluetooth standby function and Battery Care mode can be disabled by the “Sony | Music Center” on your smartphone. The XV800 wireless party speaker has amazing omnidirectional sound, ambient lights, an IPX4 rating for water resistance, up to 25 hours of battery life, and an X-Balanced speaker that delivers distortion-free lows. It’s a powerful all-in-one package. Hope this helps. ~Earl
