No you do not need one but it can enhance movies, music, and video games. Think of a sound bar as a HiFi stereo hooked up to your TV

Please try again later.It is not necessary - however, if you're like me and you want a fuller room-filling sound experience for watching movies or tv shows without having to invest in a full-blown 5-speaker surround sound stereo system for your tv, it's a fabulous affordable enhancement. It's way cheaper alternative to a surround sound system, and if you're not trying to create a home theatre in your house, then this speaker is plenty powerful to fill up your whole room with sound. It's basically a long narrow speaker that can sit on top of your tv or entertainment console. Mine is hardly noticeable on top of my entertainment cabinet, in fact you can't even see it since it sits up high. It's also a breeze to hook up, and I can't say the same for a surround sound system. I just turn it on, hit the TV button on the soundbar remote (if I'm watching tv, otherwise I hit the Bluetooth button if I want sound from my phone to come through).

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Most of the HD TV's of today have tiny speakers built into them. They sound like a cheap transistor radio from the 60's. Soundbars are speakers with an amplifier that give you much better sound. This is a low end one but will sound 10 times better than the TV's speakers. It also has Blu tooth so you can stream music as well.
