They're very different, as their physical structures are different. R2 is easier to control because he's not a ball (BB8 takes some practice, but is a lot of fun). R2 has lights and sounds that come from his body. BB8's sounds come from the app. If the goal is to have remote control droids, then I'd say choose your favorite droid. If you want more functionality, choose R2. But BB8 is very novel and fun and crosses different surface types more easily.

The R2 unit has an internal speaker so you do not have to depend on your tablet or phone to hear it. Also, R2 would not be as sturdy or water resistant like the BB-8 model.

R2d2 have lights and integrated speaker so sound he makes comes from the droid, sound that makes bb8 comes from your smart device speaker. Also R2d2 is easier to drive comparing to bb8 wich he sometimes looses his head off when crashing or making curves while driving him. The good thing about bb8 is that he is waterproof, his shell is super durable, I have droped my bb8 from two meters from the table into hard floor and its operating perfectly. BB8 has one unique feature wich is holographic transmition recording so you can record a video and let bb8 projected via AR using the bb8 sphero app
