• This square only reads mag strips. You can upgrade to a higher square the reads mag stripes as well as chips for abou $29.00

• The magstripe reader only reads magnetic strips on cards, whether they bear chips or not. You just can't process EMV payments with it.

• The Square Reader option I got is just a magstrip reader but there is a different option for chip cards
