On a PS4 slim is optical required or optional? null

Optical is optional and cable included. You can connect it just through USB (included).

So if you want to use the Gamedac and take advantage of all the features, then yes, the optical is required. Now I also have a PS4 slim, which you might know has no optical cable. All you have to do in that case is connect the optical cable to your TV instead.

Optional you can run off usb only if you choose to just sounds better with the optical
