Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. Yes, at initial set up you will require a connection to a monitor using the VGA/HDMI ports. Due to security reasons, not alls settings can be remotely configured.

Yes, you need a monitor or tv for set up and maintenance. After setup, you can view in your phone but viewing events etc much easy with a monitor. I would suggest a simple or shared monitor. Remember, using phone needs internet/data. -AK
