• You can do basic functions such as rewind, fast forward volume etc but not specialized features, no.

• Yes indeed, you sure can. When I first got it, I didn't want to use the remote since I had it sitting on my lap on a lapdesk. You just have to figure out which button does what, and push those to get it to play, pause, backup, go forward, and stop. And then, you're in business! Nice & easy!
