Is it a good lens for parties null

Unless your party is on a football playing field this lens is not a party animal, go with a wide angle lens to get everyone in the picture !

Would be fine for outdoor parties. You need to be a good distance from an adult subject to get whole body shots.

Not generally unless you're at an outdoor party with plenty of distance between you and your subjects. It would be very bad for group portraits as well due to the focal distance.
