No, you do not need to pay a monthly fee. On top of that, there is plenty of free programing available on the internet. I purchased this TV with the intent of cutting the cable, due to the cost and frequent service interruptions. As soon as my son finishes this semester of online schooling, we are pulling the plug on our current provider and going to internet only.
