“Have a Direct TV dish not used for years, It still has the cable running from the dish to where it plugs into the TV in the living room. If I connect an outdoor antenna to that cable will it work to get OTA channels? Don't want to run a second cable.”

Using the coaxial cable left over from your Directv installation should work fine. Disconnect the cable from the dish antenna and connect it to the appropriate connector on your new outdoor antenna. Connect the other end to the TV input connector on the television set.
