If you choose to operate the tv via the app, there is a button to toggle between the tv’s speakers, and those of your phone. A good set of wireless earbuds synced with your phone work great, but you may plug a set into your phone, as well(I have an iPhone). So, if you're in the middle of watching something, simply use the app to switch the sound output from tv to phone(or visa versa), via the button with the headphone symbol.

You would need to physically unplug the headphones to regain sound through the internal TV speakers. You can also download the free Roku app on your smart phone or tablet to use voice search, voice control, and experience private listening. To enjoy private listening you simply click private listening in the app, and attach headphones to your smart phone or tablet. This will also mute the TV speakers, but may be more convenient than using the headphone jack on the TV itself. Hope this helps! Thank you, TCL Customer Support
