Yes, you do have to point the remote directly at the bottom middle of the TV for it to work. It can be a pain sometimes depending on your position relative to the TV. If that is a problem for you then you can try the phone app or a universal remote. This remote also will not work to navigate menus on an xbox one system like some other TV remotes do. These deficiencies are the only negative aspects I have found regarding this TV though.
