“Will this power an MSI 970 Gaming board with FX 8300 and R9 270x? Opting out of an older 550 watt PSU with barely enough guts to push it. Any info appreciated”

I used this to replace a 500 watt supply in an AMD FX system. It also has a separate connector for higher power graphics cards in gaming machines.

Yes it will it has 23 amps on the 12 volt rail with a 6 or 8 pin connector as well as a 20 amp rail with a 6 pin rail for a second graphics card.

If your 550 w unit is not cutting it I'd suggest higher than a 600 W to replace it. I understand this is somewhat older now but if you do see this and you are still rocking an R9 that is a fairly power hungry (now older as well) GPU I'd proably get a 750 Watt PSU in your shoes. The higher the rating the better (bronze, silver, gold).

This should give you a little to spare. However, if you start piling on more stuff I'd opt for something heavier with a case that has a lot of fans.
