After the first year (included with purchase of the Bolt at least) yes, there is a monthly fee OR you can pay through the nose for a "Lifetime Service" contract ONLY good for that one device. They on occasion offer a chance to transfer that service to a new unit, which currently is a WHOPPING $500....far more than they ever charged their current customers in the past.

You might not have to if you pay for your Tivo in full. However, if you want the digital cards (there are two slots for them) then you have to pay through your cable tv a little bit more for digital quality. I have had my Tivo for over 6 years now and I love it. I pay its fee through time warner (and it's like $10 extra a month)
