• I believe you can. Mine still did all the start up stuff before I officially activated it on the TIVO website. I'm not sure if you would get updates and such if you don't activate it for a while.

• No, you need to get the subscription to get all the listings and activate the DVR.

• Yes but you will not be able to use the programming guide function that reaches out to all sources to show you what is playing and at what time. I believe you would need to manually record programs since the system would not be able to show you when and where a program is being played.
