“Do I need a smart phone or computer to use this product? I am giving this as a gift to someone who does not have either a smart phone or a computer and was wondering if it would still be functional without either of these devices.”

It works on its own, but in order to access all of its functions, such as tracking your goals and/or progress, you will need to have a device to download apps.
