4K refers to the pixel size. 1080 is the pixel size for that range of television. 1920 x 1080 is the pixel range for a 1080 television. If you double that, you get 3840 x 2160. 3840 is close to 4000 thus the term 4K. Essentially, a 4K television has twice the amount of pixels that a 1080 termed television does. Hope this helps.
