• I have my sound bar connected to the digital optical plug and the tv speakers work in conjunction with the soundbar. Hope this helps to answer your question somewhat

• The speakers stay on unless you turn them off, so yes, your idea will work. But this set also has Bluetooth, so that may be an option. Not sure if the speakers automatically disconnect when using it or not.
