• I would hold off on Windows 8.1 I have heard there are numerous bugs in the system. Stick with Windows 8.0 for the time being. I would imagine, based on past experience with Windows, that 8.1. is NOT that substantially different than 8.0. I have been working with 8.0 for a while now and am in no hurry for 8.1. Bide your time a bit longer. That's my suggestion anyway.

• Windows 8.1 is a free upgrade for Windows 8 users. If your Windows 8 software and manufacturer software is up to date, then Windows 8.1 will appear as a free download in the Microsoft Store on your Windows desktop. The update process is fairly automated.

• Microsoft will let any Windows 8 user upgrade to 8.1 for free.
