“How do I know if I need 500mb/s or for double the money 1gb/s?? I want to hook up TV, the signal through wifi doesn't work and I want to try this before actually moving router to the livingroom”

If it's just your tv the 500 should be good. The device is capable of giving you that speed.

If not too much hassle, buy the cheaper unit, actually try it in your home (didn't work in my old place) & 'ping' your speed. Then decide if you want to return item and go faster.
