“Installation of the TP-link creates a separate wifi address named *** ext. When moving away from the ext connection it loses the wifi and has to be reconnected as though it was separate from the main wifi. Is this common?”

If you would prefer a more seamless, unified WiFi experience, please select the "copy router SSID" option during setup. This will ensure your extender uses the same WiFi name (SSID) as your router so your devices will only see one SSID for both the router and extender.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.As with all wifi, it has a limited range. It has to stay in-range to both your router and your device. If it gets out of range to your router, then you get no signal. Same if you get too far away from the extender.
