I believe that one needs to be connect to the router.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You need to first connect the device (one of the mesh extenders) to your existing router. These extenders need to get their internet signal from your router -- then they will "extend/amplify" it around your home. I've had them for about 9 months and they work great. Easy to set up and they are reliable. I previously had the FREE AT&T extenders and they work like crap.
