Hi RC, Cat5 can be used for data connectivity; however, please bear in mind that Cat5 is rated for up to 100 Mbps and is sub-optimal for use with PoE devices. Generally speaking, for a Gigabit Ethernet device, and if you intend to power it via PoE, we highly suggest Cat5e for best results.
