No, subscription is not required. The Tapo application is free and you do have the option to subscribe to have the recordings stored on the cloud, but if you don’t want to you can just have the recordings on your SD card.

If you use Apple HomeKit a subscription is not required, however, if you are not the only way to have recordings in the cloud is with a subscription that otherwise would be covered by having them with Apple HomeKit.
