The MP3 player, FM radio, WIFI access all work without activation. You can think of this as a pretty inexpensive IPod equivalent although its memory is a bit limited without adding a memory card. The player feature and FM reception are both better than my Sansa Clip, which is a dedicated device with no Wifi or app capabilities.
