“Considering this phone for my 10-year-old. What all would i need to buy to have it set up so we could pay $20/month and have her able to start sending texts and selfies on Christmas day? I don't understand all the pre-paid, contract/no contract options.”

We have used trac phones for years. The benefit of buying prepaid (minutes, data and texting) is that you aren’t locked into a contract. The cost is very reasonable IF you don’t do gaming and video watching on your phone which uses a lot of data. We pay for a one year (renewable yearly) subscription and a set number of minutes, data and text. You get a lot of texting for little cost. You can take lots of pictures. The cost on pictures/selfies only comes - using data - when you SEND pictures/selfies. Sending lots of pictures and/or videos it can get expensive. I recommend usage guidelines for children. You can get a partial year subscription but getting a year is the most cost effective.
