I still have minutes, text and just purchased data thinking that was the problem. this was a gift for my daughter and though she has only had it since this past Christmas we would like to upgrade to the galaxy. Yes, you can transfer your phone number, service days, and minutes, texts, and data. It works great. I didn't lose a minute.

Depending on the damage to your old phone, you may not be able to get your contacts/pictures off of it, but you will at least have a working phone.
