“Does this phone work out of the box or is there additional set up, plan or activation needed? I want it for an 11-year old that I do not want to have a smartphone yet but he will be away for the week and I want to talk/text him without wifi.”

The phone does not work out of the box. It needs to be set up with an email address and payment card. The account is for buying phone minutes. The phone has all the features of a smart phone. It has apps and internet, Facebook etc.
