No, you can just plug and play on the X1 and the ps4 , the headset has volume controls, idk how it sounds on the ps4 but i assume it would be the same. I personally like blowing up my ear drums when something EPIC happen in the game...... AWHHHH DEATHCLAW!!!!! for example.
