• The base is heavy enough if you mount the the TV to the bracket I would not recommend just placing it on the top shelf There is not enough weight on the base of the TV

• I mounted my 55 to the stand instead of using the top shelf. I would say for a 50in tv, if you have little ones I would use the straps that come with it and attach it to the wall if you plan on putting your tv on the top shelf.
